Behavior
Gassy will rush directly at the player about 3 seconds after it spawns, exploding in a visual 3 x 3 block radius, Gassy's explosion hitbox is about 1.5 x 1.5 blocks*, but you will not take damage or receive the status effect Poisoned if you're within the 3 x 3 explosion, but outside of the 1.5 x 1.5 hitbox. Gassy deals absurd knockback on its explosion**, and little to none on contact damage.
*Gassy's explosion hitbox may actually be 1 x 1, I'm not certain, but the enemy generally ends up halfway in two blocks. This can also work to your advantage, as Gassy's hitbox can be completely avoided by strategic positioning of the player. Even jumping at the right time will sometimes be enough to completely avoid Gassy's hitbox.
**From experience, it seems that Gassy's knockback varies depending on how close you are to it, within the explosion area, but I could be wrong.
Tips/Tricks
- When Gassy spawns, it spends its first few seconds determining where to target the player, so it's best not to move until it charges. Doing so will allow you to manipulate where Gassy will end up, which can help you if you're in a bad situation. You can also dig straight down or sideways, if your pickaxe has good/great efficiency against rocks, you should be able to tunnel fast enough to evade Gassy.
- You should do your best to avoid Gassy's contact damage as it charges towards you. Taking contact damage from Gassy when it's charging will put you into hitstun for about a half second. Though usually negligible, while you're in that stun, you can't move. Sometimes, this will result in you being unable to escape Gassy's explosion range, and you will receive the 10 second Poisoned debuff.
- Gassy's explosion attack will result in high knockback, high damage, and the 10 second Poisoned debuff.* If there are multiple enemies, your main focus should be not getting hit by Gassy. The slowness could end your mine run.
- In the event where you do get hit, and you've received the Poisoned debuff, it's better to not move around, except to avoid damage. Moving will trigger more enemy spawn, which could result in you being swarmed.
*Having the perk Antidote will reduce the slowness to around 7.5 seconds.
